Design Trends for 2018

As a custom home builder, Glenn Layton Homes gets to see the impact of design and color trends in each home they build. While plenty of coastal homes will always draw influence from the stunning environment surrounding them, many homeowners aren’t afraid to mix things up a little and find ways to incorporate the latest trends in a way that still complements their home. As 2017 transitioned into 2018, there are some of the design trends that Glenn Layton is seeing pop up in many of the homes they are building in Jacksonville and the surrounding area.

In 2017, every shade of blue imaginable made its way into homes, blending well with the coastal vibe. However, this year, people are adding bold colors such as fiery reds and vivid purples. Instead of watery blues, thinks of the bold colors of some of the fish and other creatures living in the water. Go all out or keep the most of the room neutral — even if that neutral is a deep, dark blue — and choose a statement piece of furniture and smaller accessories in one of these bold colors.

Speaking of neutrals, those cooler grey tones are still in use, but now some warmth is added in with hints of caramel and warmer woods serving as accents. To warm things up even more, but still with a sense of classic elegance, dusty rose is taking over as a neutral. It’s not just for girly bedrooms anymore. Think of the beautiful dusky pinks inside shells or in sunsets rather than pretty princesses, if that helps.

Just as shells have a pearlescent, almost metallic sheen, metals are playing an even bigger part in home design this year. Silvers will always remain popular, but gold is making a huge resurgence, especially aged golds, brass, and light bronze. From wallpapers, faux finishes, to side tables, fabrics, and other accessories, metallics are definitely on trend in 2018. Mixing finishes is also proving highly popular. Consider hammered brass sidetables or rich fabrics with plenty of gold and other metallic threads running through them.

Since last year, bold colors are making an impact in homes, from wallpapers to accessories. Vivid, strong greens were showing up everywhere last year. This year, though, when it comes to truly bold, black is making the ultimate statement. Floors, chandeliers, and even entire walls are turning rooms sleek, sexy, and sophisticated. This isn’t goth; it’s glamorous. Use it on one wall and break up the darkness with a gallery wall of black and white pictures. Or be as bold as your color choice and let it stand on its own. With the homes that Glenn Layton builds, even a black-walled room will still get plenty of natural light.
